Diabetes: A Global Innovation Competition for Digital Solutions for Patients

On 13 September, Ascendia Diabetes Care announced the Ascensia Diabetes Challenge, a global innovation contest seeking innovative digital solutions that will help manage the diabetes, during the 53rd Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) diabetes and improving the lives of people with type 2 diabetes.

The challenge is to find new ways to deal with the global epidemic of type 2 diabetes, discovering new, unexplored solutions from the innovators of the field. The predominant, runners-up and winner will receive cash prizes to support the development of their ideas from a total of € 200,000.

Through this contest, Ascensia aims to support companies that are taking the next big step in digital solutions that could help better manage Type 2 diabetes and help reduce its impact on individuals, health systems and in society. Although solutions and treatments in this field continue to improve from year to year, many of the emerging technologies that are currently developing need further investment to ensure that they can play an important role in helping people with type 2 diabetes be able to better manage all aspects of their situation.

"At Ascensia, we are excited to take this initiative, as we want to encourage the use of innovation in the area in which we operate and to review the ways in which digital technology can help people with type 2 diabetes manage their daily lives" , said Konstantinos Natsis, Managing Director of Ascensia Diabetes Care Greece. "This contest represents a modern approach to finding innovative solutions for people with diabetes, alongside our own research and development. This initiative will not eliminate the epidemic of diabetes by itself, but it is an important step in developing new solutions for diabetes. Its goal is to explore, support and cultivate ideas from start-ups that have the potential to radically change the management of diabetes. We hope that this challenge can create new ideas from unexplored sources and with the support of Ascensia, we want to be able to make them available to the population with diabetes worldwide ".

Entries from Europe, America and Asia Pacific will be accepted in the competition, and the submission of entries for Europe is October 1, 2017, and for Asia and America November 6, 2017. Entries may be submitted here through an electronic portal.

A jury of independent experts in the field of diabetes and digital health from various parts of the world, as well as members of the Medical Department, the Research and Development Department and the Ascensia Department of Business, will evaluate the entries and determine the predominant and the winner. The Dr. William Polonsky , Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Masood Nazir, a general practitioner with considerable experience in diabetes and digital health, and Robin Swindell , a type 2 diabetes blogger, have already confirmed as the first three judges and will soon be announced.

The Dr. William Polonsky , Chair and Co-Founder of the Behavioral Diabetes Institute in San Diego, USA, explained: "Behavioral interventions are the key to strengthening self-management of type 2 diabetes and digital solutions are necessary as a means of activating the people with diabetes, in the long run and allow for a long-term change in their behavior. Unfortunately, existing digital solutions have not yet managed to fully meet patients' needs or to effectively support self-management and long-term change in behavior. I am excited to be a member of the Ascensia Diabetes Challenge to try and find the next innovations to deal with type 2 diabetes. "

The Robin Swindell , who has type 2 diabetes and is an active blogger from UK said: "Like most patients with type 2 diabetes, see a health professional for only two hours a year. For the rest of the time, we rely on self-management. We need to find innovative digital solutions that better support our self-management of diabetes. Solutions must be able to personalize and fit our lives. They should also offer quantitative data that can help us understand and better manage our situation and provide us with incentives. Digital solutions have the potential to meet these needs. I am glad to be part of this challenge and I hope it will bring to the surface a new innovation that can have a real impact on me and on other people with diabetes. "

Ascensia for the implementation of this global competition has teamed up with yet2, an open innovation service provider. Still 2 will manage the submission process and initial screening of applications. They will use their experience in open innovation projects to support the initial stages of submission, manage intellectual property control and support the evaluation process.

Konstantinos Natsis added: "As a company focusing on diabetes, we want to lead the innovation agenda to diabetes, to show our continued support for the diabetes community as a reliable ally and to show our commitment to continuous research, innovation and developing new solutions. "
