Experts recall that the most effective way of preventing measles is vaccination with the measles-rubella-mumps vaccine (MMR) and reiterate that the meticulous observance of the National Vaccine Program is the best way to protect children and adults from infectious diseases. Immediate vaccination of children, adolescents and non-vaccinated adults with the necessary doses is recommended. According to the National Vaccine Program, children, adolescents and adults born after 1970 who have no history of disease should be vaccinated with 2 doses of measles vaccine (in the form of a monovalent measles vaccine or mixed MMR vaccine). Lifelong immunity has only those who have previously been ill and those who have both doses of vaccine.
At its meeting on 6 September, in the presence of the Secretary-General for Public Health Ioannis Basskozou, the National Vaccines Committee also decided: In addition, because of the epidemic outbreak of measles, it recommends that the first dose of the MMR vaccine at the age of 12 months the second installment is three (3) months after the first dose or - if this period has elapsed - as soon as possible. In high risk cases, the 2nd dose may be given at least 4 weeks apart from 1 st. These recommendations apply as long as the outbreak of measles is underway and until a new Commission Decision is adopted.
The epidemiological surveillance of the disease, the vigilance of health professionals, the intensification of vaccinations and the continued vigilance of local and national authorities are essential measures to control the disease, HICP reports.
Delayed treatment of measles is reported by POEDIN
The Hellenic Federation of Workers in Public Hospitals (POEDIN) calls on the Ministry of Health to "delay" the treatment of measles by saying that "once measles cases have been reported to Health Professionals, the situation has escaped as the lives of affected health professionals and there is a great risk of transmitting the disease to colleagues and patients ".
According to POEDIN at Thriassi Hospital, five workers from measles, two nurses, one doctor and two canteen employees were infected. POEDIN notes that due to lack of money, "the Ministry of Health and HCDCP did not provide hospitals with the necessary reagents to control measles antibodies or the necessary vaccines."
