Iraq: Double bombing Kirkouk- six dead [Images & Video]

At least six people were killed Sunday in a double-suicide bombing attack in central Kirkuk, the city won three weeks ago from the hands of the federal Iraqi Kurdish forces said an officer of the security services.

Other 12 people were injured in the two explosions, which were made with 15 minutes difference from one another, the same source stated AFP speaking on condition not to be named.

The first attack committed by a suicide bomber driving a car trapped with explosives and a second man wore a vest with explosives, according to the same officer.

The aim of the attack is believed to be Shiite mosque. But the attack also took place near an old police outpost now used by Saraya let Salam ( "Peace Brigades" in Arabic), paramilitary units of the powerful Shiite leader Moqtada Sadr, said the same source.

The Saraya let Salam belong to Chasnt let Saab, paramilitaries who participated in the recapture by the military sites sovereignty claim on which both the federal government in Baghdad and the Kurds.

The double attack committed Atlas Avenue, a main thoroughfare of the city of almost one million inhabitants, which is full of shops and buildings of local authorities.

Kirkuk is at the center of tension between Baghdad and Arbil following a September 25 referendum on independence organized despite the objections of Baghdad in the autonomous region of Kurdistan and beyond, especially in the disputed province of Kirkuk.

Before completed one month, the 16th October, government troops and paramilitaries moved and recaptured nearly all the disputed territory.

These areas are, in the Iraqi Constitution, the jurisdiction of the central government in Baghdad, but their status remains to be clarified in the negotiations about to be made. After the American invasion in 2003 in the midst of the chaos that followed the occupation of a large part of Iraqi territory by the jihadists of the Islamic State in 2014, the Kurdish fighters, the peshmerga, have most of these areas under their control.

There was no claim of responsibility for the twin bombings Sunday, however, this kind of method of action refers to IK.
