Toy import from China affected by stringent quality standards

According to industry estimates, the government has made the quality norms very difficult, hence the toy import from China has fallen more than 50% since then. It is compulsory to get compliance certification with authorized agencies since September 1. About 70% of Chinese toys are made for the Indian toy industry, this figure is worth Rs. 5000 crores.

Due to changing norms retail prices have increased by 8-14% and this has affected the supply also. According to industry, wholesale prices have gone up to 30% and rates are expected to increase further.

According to the big retailers, the toy supply will be further influenced by the current festive season which will last until Christmas.

According to the industry, units holding about 4-5 lakh shares every year (SKUs) are imported in India. In India, only 3-4 labs are authorized to test toys for compliance by the National Accreditation Board for testing and calibration laboratories (NABL). In one week, these laboratories can see 100-150 SKUs.

About 70% of Chinese toys are made for the Indian toy industry, this figure is worth Rs. 5000 crores. In order to handle large amounts of toys, besides upgrading the old test systems to meet the new rules, there is a lot of new infrastructure needed. In the festive season, this will take time and the availability of the toy will be delayed.

DGFT of Foreign Trade (DGFT) had issued a notification on September 1, which states that if the manufacturer meets the standard set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), toy import will be allowed only. Testing for indoor and outdoor toys for both mechanically and electrically operated, it also sets criteria for physical and mechanical properties, chemical materials, and flammability.
