De Gintos is catching clients of the Catalan banks

Spanish Finance Minister Luis de Gintos said today that clients of Catalan banks have no reason to worry because of the crisis that broke out between Barcelona and Madrid.

"The Catalan banks are Spanish and European banks and their clients have no reason to worry," de Gintos said on the sidelines of a Madrid conference.

At the same time, the Finance Minister described "statements of Spanish King Felipe yesterday," which accused the heads of the Catalan separatists of "breaking the democratic principles and dividing the Catalan society", "right and absolutely clear.

Concern in banks

An indication of the concern that exists in business and banking circles is the fact that CaixaBank, headquartered in Barcelona, told employees yesterday that it is "important to proactively communicate" to its clients the commitment of the banking institution to defense of their interests, which "will lead to decisions which, if necessary, should be taken".

In her internal announcement, "Striking and mobilizing in Catalonia", which was copied by the Spanish news agency EFE, Caixabank refers extensively to the political situation in Catalonia.

CaixaBank makes it clear that it 'respects' the right to strike and mobilize its employees and stresses that its "unique goal" as a banking institution is to "protect at any time the interests of its customers, shareholders and employees, integrity of deposits'.

She also reiterates that her dedication to defending the interests of her clients has been a "long-distance" guide to her history and stresses that she is committed to "providing guidance also for future decisions that, if deemed necessary, must be taken".

The bank points out in the same text that yesterday a general strike was launched in Catalonia and that a number of Catalan businessmen stopped working for a few minutes to "make their protest" of what happened last Sunday, an indirect reference to the bloody police intervention to prevent the 1 October referendum on the independence of Catalonia.
